About Kensington

Kensington is an upscale community in San Diego, California that is known for its Spanish Revival architecture which was created in the late 1920s.

Kensington covers 115 acres that overlook the Mission Valley area. It is bordered by Interstate 15, Interstate 8, Fairmount Avenue, and El Cajon Boulevard. City Heights and Normal Heights are neighbors. The name of this community is English as are many of the street names. The home exterior designs were inspired by architect Richard Requa and his Mediterranean influences. Many of the original homes were built by the Davis Baker Company of Pasadena. Kensington is close to many services and is considered to be a great walking community.

The San Diego Unified School District is the second largest in the state. Students in this community may attend facilities like Franklin Elementary School, Wilson Middle School, and Hoover High School. There are hundreds of private institutions like the Calvary Christian Academy, Escondido Adventists Academy, the Montessori American School, and Halstrom Academy. Public universities include the University of California (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU) as well as the San Diego Community College District.

Kensington is mostly residential but there is a small business district along Adams Avenue that offers restaurants, banks, real estate offices, a liquor store, coffee house, and travel agency. Locals enjoy Ponce’s Mexican Restaurant which has been there since 1969 and the Kensington Grill. Nighttime entertainment can be found at the Kensington Club.

San Diego is California’s second largest city and the nation’s eighth. Its economy relies on tourism, manufacturing, international trade, and military defense related activities. There are 52 community planning areas here and more than 100 individual communities. This city is known for the San Diego Zoo as well as museums like the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
